About NAAM > Mission statement
Our mission statement
To disseminate knowledge about the cultural history and the cultural – tangible and intangible - heritage of Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St. Eustatius en St. Maarten and strengthen the cultural identity of their population in a Caribbean perspective.
Our tasks
Besides traditional tasks of a museum, which include the conservation and documentation of archaeological and anthropological collections, NAAM also works on cultural resource management through
- The identification of threatened locations and sites, its mapping and registering
- Archaeological & anthropological research
- The production of educational materials for schools and training
- Advice and services to policy makers and professionals about safeguarding, legislation and enrichment of our collective cultural memory.

Our definition of culture
Following the starting-points of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) we define culture as:
The spiritual and material, intellectual and emotional characteristics that distinguish a society or group.
- This includes artistic expressions and literature as well as fundamental human rights, values, traditions and religions
- We assign special attention to the determining role of culture for the identity of a society or social group, especially for developing regions, countries and population groups
- A society’s Cultural heritage is an essential component of a society’s culture.
What is Cultural heritage?
Cultural heritage includes the unique and irreplaceable cultural artifacts and collective memories of a society as vital sources of its history, culture and its identity.
